Good for You and Good for the Environment
Organic foods are produced in accordance with principles which take
the environment and animal welfare into consideration. An important
principle in organic production is that the farmer does not use
fertilizers or synthetic crop sprays.
It is well known that chemical sprays are not good for the environment and that residues of sprays are often found in the ground water. The principles of organic production contribute to reducing the total chemical load on the environment. The rejection of sprays and the focus on natural and mechanical methods of fighting weeds and insects make room for a higher number of weeds and insects species.
This is also the reason for a richer birdlife near organically cultivated fields than near conventionally cultivated fields. Organic farmers have to implement a more extensive cultivation of the soil and a more balanced use of manure and slurry. Organic farmers do not grow or use GMO crops and are not allowed to use plant growth regulators such as chlormequats.
